Smart fluoride varnish capable of releasing fluoride only when oral pH falls below a critical threshold
Abstract
Dental caries is a dynamic pH-dependent disease characterized by cycles of enamel demineralization and remineralization influenced by bacterial acid production. Conventional fluoride varnishes provide effective caries prevention; however, their continuous fluoride release may not correspond with the changing conditions of the oral environment. Smart fluoride varnishes represent an innovative approach that incorporates pH-responsive materials capable of detecting acidic conditions and releasing fluoride ions only when oral pH decreases below a critical threshold. These intelligent systems aim to enhance fluoride availability during periods of increased cariogenic activity while minimizing unnecessary fluoride exposure under neutral conditions. The integration of responsive polymers, nanocarriers, and bioactive components allows controlled fluoride delivery, prolonged therapeutic action, and improved enamel remineralization potential. Such materials may provide targeted protection for high-risk individuals, including patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, children susceptible to caries, and individuals with frequent acid challenges. Although promising, further research is required to optimize release mechanisms, evaluate long-term stability, and establish clinical effectiveness. Smart fluoride varnishes represent a significant advancement toward personalized preventive dentistry by combining environmental sensing with therapeutic fluoride delivery.
